Historic Weapons Protocol

  1. This document in intended to acquaint participants with the protocols in place regarding the use of Firearms during the Loyalist Landing 2008 Weekend.

All participants must follow the regulations set out in the following documents for the course of the event:

    1. The Criminal Code of Canada and the Firearms Act regarding the possession, use, and safe storage of Firearms.

  2. All participants entering Canada from Europe or the United States are required to declare all firearms in their possession to Canada Customs at their point of entry. Originals or reproductions of flintlocks, wheel locks or match lock firearms manufactured after 1898, other than hand guns, are exempt from registration and the owners do not require a firearm licence to bring these firearms into Canada. Hand guns of this era must be registered and the owners must have a firearm licence. This is accomplished by completing a non-resident firearm declaration which is deemed to be a temporary firearms licence as well. There will be a one time processing fee of $25 CAD for this service regardless of the number of firearms. Any participant bringing their pistols will require an Authorization to Transport which is issued by their local Chief Firearms Officer or for non residents by the Chief Firearm Officer of Nova Scotia. That office can be reached by calling 1-800-731-4000 - ext 6505. Please consult the Canadian Firearms Centre for additional information at their web site http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/contact/default_e.asp or by calling 1-800-731-4000 or via email: cfc-cafc@cfc-cafc.gc.ca.

All other firearms will require the completion of a non resident declaration form. Contact the RCMP here.

Participants should also bring a certificate of good conduct from their local Police Authority as this may be requested by Canada Customs when making your Firearms Declaration. Participants must have valid Firearms Licence and are responsible for the security of their firearms at all times.

  3. Muzzle loading Mortars and Artillery are exempt from registration and licencing requirements.

  4. The Shelburne Reenactment Association will provide a letter of invitation to the event for all participants to present to Canada Customs if requested.

  5. The Chief Provincial Firearms Officer for Nova Scotia will send a notice to Canada Customs regarding this event. This message will be distributed to all Border Services Officers at points of entry in Canada to expedite processing of participants through Customs.

  6. Participants will be required to present a copy of their Temporary or Permanent Firearms Licence and picture ID during event registration. An event ID card will be issued upon registration and must be kept on your person during the event.

  7. Units have the option of posting a sentry for their firearms should individual members wish to go off site.

  8. Cleaning of firearms will be confined to designated areas. Sand discharge drums will be provided for the safe clearing of firearms.
